OTI:one pic, notes:11/8/17

Notes: from another woodblock print by Koitso (see yesterday's post)...a curio is he stylizes feathers just like the ancient Egyptians did on Horus...near like anyway...this one an effort to find some styling of my own...thought to just use brushes and ink...best thought...but my attention kind of dulled...more inclined tonight to watch the Lakers...and find a movie to watch!...so just used the brush pen, and tried to get a feel for the sweeps and swirls in the original...

which is wonderful...

OTI:one pic, notes, one poem:11/7/17

Notes: kept trying to size to fit on the page Phalarope and Phalarope's reflection...using a 5x8 140 lb watercolor notebook page...and couldn't do it...erased away the pencil under drawing like four times...that's why there's no feet...Phalarope is standing in water...from Cement River post pic...gobbled up much time today trying to figure out what happened to the notes stored on my iphone 4's notepad...apparently they are synched with my yahoo mail account...and in the troubles trying to update my old iphone 4 to keep pace with yahoo's security updates, I deleted my yahoo account on the phone...this broke the sync, and the notes disappeared...a lot of them anyway...like from June on back...which is sad...as I had a lot of miscellaneous things there I never posted...the ones I worked up and posted, from the routine of writing on the notepad and emailing them to myself, I think I still have all those, in my yahoo account I access from my windows 7 laptop...I still have my yahoo mail archive...that goes back a very long way...I think...haven't looked in awhile...oh...have to check that too!...and the posts to google blog are still okay....and I had another back up...a forward to a second yahoo account...but if yahoo gets to messing around someday with updates that affect old windows on old computers, I'll lose a lot of stuff...if I could re-do on the phone the old yahoo email and its 'account' my notes would reappear, or so it's said...problem is I can't with the old phone...on newer ones that works, if by mischance one deletes an email account and finds their notepad notes gone...I need to just make hardcopies of everything as I go along...a poem...ending keeps wobbling about...'until then, you'll take your lumps'...was it, then, 'as you, and anyone that risks' I added...then looked up 'lump'...it's not 'bump' which was my notion...oh it is...but 'lump' by itself is really a 'word'!...four letter words are charming for their succinctness!...so, 'lump' it 'is'...

Open Mic

Oh,
Everyone and anyone
Is invited
So long as you
Patronize the patron,
Buy a beer, a snack,
Something, anything--
A piece of chocolate cake.
And there you are,
It don't matter if you're gawdawful,
Applause will announce
Your arrival,
And given in assessement
At your conclusion--patter.
The sincere are shy, you know,
Given to gracious politeness.
Someday maybe
When you walk out,
Guitar case in hand,
Into the columned night streets,
Someone you didn't know
Will follow
With a pen and a number--a new fan.
Until then,
You, and anyone,
Is a lump.

OTI:one pic, notes:11/6/17

Notes: 'over the centuries Chinese and Japanese art was stylistic' I posted yesterday, and, so, checking my own veracity, I was looking at google images 'Japanese art'...and happened on 'Boats At Shinegawa--Night'...'Oh!, my one mast one sail, and much more!'...Tsuchiya Koitsu the artist I copied from...he has some more that are a fit, and I'll lift...one with a bunch of arrows flying about over a fallen horse in battle is remarkable...mine is 8x10 on illustration board done with Chinese brushes and india ink...shrunk down, my clumsiness is lessened, which is actually something illustrators depend on...make things big, and then reduce them...awkward things tend to fall out...there are two Black Ships...I was working quick so as to have time to roll over to the Gypsy Den for open mic night for the guitarists...routine of late on Monday night....Ships aren't worked up enough...was totally preoccupied keeping the moon just white paper...all the whites and light greys problematic...transparent watercolorists often use masking fluid...which I find too sticky to apply with the brush right...I worked from light to dark, and the dark areas kept getting darker...totally lost the second ship...Medea...Liz in foreground...thought at first to do it in black and white acrylic...I could see all the steps...but I didn't have time...found the pic on a late afternoon browse after a nap!...brb...

Notes: Sappho from an ancient Greek vase...see wiki's entry on Sappho...I know Petra wears pantaloons and a blouse...so have been casting about the web for blouses...and faces too!...to make an illustrated novel like story, I'm thinking, I need to have characters and costumes I can draw from any angle...I can render from a model or pic in front of me...but to render from imagination is another thing all together!...ancient artists knew all the landmarks in figure drawing...came upon that thought copying some of those 'primitive' Egyptian paintings...they could have made things perfectly lifelike if they wanted too...art history classes teach that they didn't have modern skills...not so...they cultivated a kind of un reality...just look at the centuries of stylized Japanese and Chinese art...those from cultures whose very writing system was Chinese brush and ink...they were all skilled...as Western cultures too when they still used quill pens...doing the copy, I often thought, 'oh, you knew this, and this, and that...' thinking along with the ancient artist doing each line...the Greek vase paintings are like masterpieces...brb...
Red-figure vase painting of a woman holding a lyre. On the left, a bearded man with a lyre is partially visible.

See!...oh...didn't set clock back...only twenty to eleven...time to spare!

OTI:one pic, notes:11/4/17

Notes: hmmph...another hurry scurry...didn't pick up the pencil until after rolling over to amc block for evening showing of movie Thor:Raganork2017...when I went and saw the late late showing of moviemother2017 myself and two others, a couple, were the only ones watching...this time, for Thor, the theater was packed...and a big theater...there's different sized ones...thirty of them all together...anyway, with a crowd, there's crowd reactions...and much laughter to the inside marvel jokes and humor, which sometimes I didn't follow, not seeing the previous movie, Thor, which this is a sequel to...anyway, to keep the string alive, I hurried home, and sat down, and got out the coloring book of Marvel heroes I picked up at the dollar store, for a dollar...and penciled and inked a Thor copy...kind of quickly...so to post...and thinking of the post while drawing, I thought of sitting in front of the donut shop, sipping tea and snacking on a strawberry croissant, watching traffic, and two kids walked by with giant shopping bags over their backs, emblazoned with World of Warcraft illustrations...'oh,' I thought, 'lucky kids, they've been to Blizzcon'...Blizzcon is Blizzard's yearly convention they hold at Anaheim convention center...there was that, and then in the news today, I was reading about a comic con convention in Lybia, or was it Lebanon, and it was raided by religious police...attendees locked up, organizers beaten...hmmph...

OTI:one pic, notes:11/3/17

Notes: Two Golden Slippers were about the fishing dock across from the Pavilion where the ferry takes one from the Peninsula to Balboa Island...had the 70-300 with...ink drawing from pic...been awhile since I've taken critter pics...there was a grey seagull that was crying like birds do to get their parent to disgorge some food, and the parent was an adult all white seagull, I think...and the white gull did up chuck some worms and stuff and then flew off...grey gull was left alone, and I wondered if they were even paired...I never see Seagulls nesting, or young seagulls, by young I mean small, like ducklings...do they all go to Mono Lake for mating and rearing!?...brb...cant find that, but someone in San Diego complained of a seagull nest in their chimney...search turned up that prior to 2010 there were no Osprey nests in Southern California...I'll have to make the rounds and see if the one I saw and posted is still about...when the Golden Slippers came to where the gulls were, and an OC Sheriffs boat came racing by, I lost track of the grey gull...kinda cloudy afternoon...got a nice pic of the boat...and a reference photo of the Pavilion...a pen and ink of the Pavilion is de rigor for any artist in Town!...along with a plein air of main beach in Laguna...bit shy about going about that one...cheeseburger and fries at Ruby's at Pier's End...churro at the ferry...hot tea at grocery next to the hot dog stand where ferry reaches Balboa...riding along the Peninsula, I wondered why I've always liked it so much...well, of course the ocean...but, those folk are all ridiculously rich...and that maybe why too...crowded patio three stories up with view overlooked my photo efforts...that, and there's always a cute girl attendant on the ferry...

OTI: two poems, note, two pics: 11/2/17

Open To Interpretation

Start

"How deep are we?"
Asked Cerulean.
"Deeper than the deep blue sea!"
Laughed Petra.
"Here, for all we know,
The Earth could be
Going around the Moon
Instead of the Sun."
The three teams assembled
And circled about,
Before them a glowing cavern's
Opening at the base of the Pinnacle.
Fumerals steamed and fumed,
Pillow lavas oozed and bubbled red.
"How do we start?"
Asked Cerulean.
"Are you ready?"
Asked Petra.
"As ever!" said Cerulean.
"Let's go!"
Said Petra.
And off they all went.
Simultaneously all three teams
On their Black Ship Pods
Towed by their White Whales,
Shot forward,
Squeezing into the first cavern--
A good start.

Are We Racing?

In some ancient
When and then and there,
The Pinnacle erupted
In the manner of a
Bubbling froth,
Lava pouring out and
Down its slopes
Making a maze of lava tubes,
A crenelated labyrinth
Of narrow passage ways
Interwoven through
Caverns and galleries.
The entire mountain's sides
We're more of a lattice work
Than a solid form,
A quirky result of molten stone
Reacting with the cold deep sea.
Now long dormant, the Pinnacle
Was home to shoaling fish
That parted as the teams neared them.
Still some heat kept the walls
Red and glowing,
And Cerulean looked forward
Into the wild mix of colorful fish
And marine growth covering the mountain's black stone.
"Are we racing or sight seeing?"
Asked Cerulean.
"Your turn with the tether reigns!"
Said Petra
She shuffled back,
Motioned for Cerulean to take center,
And the reigns.
"Hold tight for dear life!"
But Petra's White Whale
Dwaddled while Poe's and Ichi's
White Whales fanned their tails
And accelerated ahead.
Cerulean could sense their
White Whale through the tether.
"Just think something,"
Said Petra,
"Or say it, like 'onward'--
That always works."
"Onward!" said Cerulean
And their White Whale
Thrashed its tail
And leaped ahead
Giving chase.
Petra and Dana had reached around
Cerulean and gripped the reigns,
Their hands with his.
"Sometimes it takes three
To hold on." Petra said.
"Now we're racing!"
