Hawaii vs. Guatemala
Except for rare instances, Hawaiian volcanoes don't explode. And they simply aren't capable of producing pyroclastic flows, said Phoenix. The reason why is Hawaii's magma — underground molten rock — is not as thick and gooey as that beneath explosive volcanoes like Volcán de Fuego, Mt. Saint Helens, or Mount Vesuvius, which are more formally known as stratovolcanoes.

from an ad filled site...but everyone knows this, I think, but, what are those 'rare instances'?...brb...well, for some reason the lava lake that was in the Hawaii volcano crater sank away, and the rock walls it supported are collapsing into the crater, plugging it...the lava is reaching ground water, making steam that can't escape the crater, and so now and then an eruption...tossing out boulders...wanted to call them bolides!...but that's reserved for meteors...a small note: one of those just got tracked crashing into Africa...youtubes of it lighting up the sky as it disintegrated...game's not on...it's only 3:40...and 90 degrees out...don't feel much like stirring about, so this might be a long post!...maybe a break for snack and nap...there's thought there is an underwater volcano in the Gulf Of Mexico...oh...wait...a 'go figure'...during the afternoon before the Saturday game I went to, I read Clive Cussler's...oh, he has co-author...and Thomas Perry's, book, The Mayan Secrets...forget how I got cued to it...and the yarn gets going from an eruption of Volcan Tocan, which is right next to, about, Volcan Fuego, the one now in the news...the depiction in the novel is very close to the news stories...oh, wait, I have that wrong...it was an earthquake, then the book's intrepid heroes climb Tocan to help villagers...no eruptions, but the Mayan secret is in a cave on Tocan's slopes that was covered over by a pumice flow centuries earlier...don't know but the story arcs along Cussler's writing career...one book made/found...then a whole bunch...success!...he's semi famous hereabouts...a home grown writer...was curios how he gathered Mayan lore into his story, so picked it up at the library...which didn't have any Mayan books...a disappointment...libraries have small budgets...and books get swiped...next time I go, I'll check to see if through inter library loans I can get some Mesoamerican books...like the big coffee table types with lots of pics...anyway, there's said to be a hot spot in the Gulf of Mexico causing the strange East Coast weather, and the thought is it's a volcano-the large pool of a magma typical of super volcanos like Yellowstone and Mammoth...the Gulf Of Mexico is where the bolide that wiped out the dinosaurs landed, (this may be urban legend...and confused with crater near Yucatan, which did do the dinosaurs) and blew out so much of the earth's crust that it left only a thin layer of crust over the magma layer...we're all afloat on magma...brb...

Xicalcoliuhqui (also referred to as a "step fret" or "stepped fret" design and greca in Spanish) is a common motif in Mesoamerican art.[1][2][3][4] It is composed of three or more steps connected to a hook or spiral, reminiscent of a "greek-key" meander.[5] Pre-Columbian examples may be found on everything from jewelry, masks, ceramics, sculpture, textiles and featherwork to painted murals, codices and architectural elements of buildings.[6][7][8] The motif has been in continual use from the pre-Columbian era to the present

This tunic, dated by radiocarbon analysis to a one-hundred-year period between the sixth and seventh centuries, is made of narrow strips of varying widths and patterns that have been sewn together horizontally. The strong colors and contrasting patterns in each band create a dynamic composition. The smaller design elements seem to derive from designs that, in an earlier period, would have been more or less representational of supernatural figures but are here arranged into a nonrepeating composition that appears to be abstract. It represents a variant of the style usually associated with the south-coastal region of Nasca. However, this variant is readily distinguishable from the Nasca style and appears to have developed in the Arequipa area, farther to the south. The political relationship between these two areas is unclear, but they seem to have shared a common religious tradition. Textiles from the southern zone are better preserved than contemporaneous textiles from Nasca.

Evidence for the famous ‘step-fret’ geometric pattern so iconic of ancient Mexico can be spotted everywhere - from the pages of codices to the walls of pre-Hispanic palaces...
The image from the Codex Fejérváry-Mayer (more recently re-named the Tonalamatl de los Pochtecas or Merchants’ Almanac) shows the god of song, poetry, and music, Xochipilli, in his temple, which has the same pattern style clearly displayed in the roof.

transversal cut of the American shell, such as is shown in Figure 3.
This shape, called the "wind jewel, " is one of the most characteristic ornaments of Quetzalcoatl, who wears it on his chest. Figure 5 shows a bas-relief in greenstone found in Veracruz, representing Quetzalcoatl. 7 Figure 6 shows a typical stylization of the wind jewel, which is seen on Quetzalcoatl in the codices. The upper portion of the figure is a necklace of snail shells. Neither the wind jewel nor snail shell is seen on any of the Mexican deities other than Quetzalcoatl. The exterior of this bowl has three painted and incised registers. Step-frets, possibly symbols of hills or mountains, in alternating black and orange rectangles, flank a central black band with simple incised decoration. On the interior, the sides of the bowl are painted red. The tripod feet are hollow, with rattles inside.

The mosaics are found on the internal and external walls of almost every building, including palaces, municipal buildings and within tombs. Because they feature on such a broad array of buildings and with only 6 or so different designs in total, it would seem their meaning must be fairly broad or very simple. However, the individual designs typically found together, normally stratified into horizontal bands using 3 different designs. This suggests they may have been creating compositions that bore new extended meanings, thus providing the potential for more than 100 permutations and a far more complex language.

During the last few centuries prior to the Spanish conquest, ceremonial vessels in Mexico had simple forms with large surfaces to which complex decoration could be applied. On this vessel, red extends over the entire surface, including the straight-sided neck and base, and over it the designs are in dark brown, white, red, and orange outlined in black. A multifigural scene involving nine individuals in profile engaging in different actions appears on the chamber of the jar. The postures of the figures vary, and the three males are distinguished from the females by size, costume, and attributes. Four of the five women wear their hair bound in two topknots held with a white band. The fifth female is shown kneeling in an enclosure, her head thrown back and her eye closed. It has been suggested that this figure portrays a woman who had died during childbirth and that the scene may relate to the myth of the birth of Quetzalcoatl, the quasi-historical ruler-priest of the ancient city of Tula whose mother had died during parturition.
Although the vessel is said to have come from Nayarit in western Mexico, its rich polychrome decoration is strongly influenced by the geometric, vividly colored painting style found primarily on ceramics and in pictorial manuscripts in central Mexico during this time.
