https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gutta

A gutta (Latin pl. guttae, "drops") is a small water-repelling, cone-shaped projection used near the top of the architrave of the Doric order in classical architecture. At the top of the architrave blocks, a row of six guttae below the narrow projection of the taenia (fillet) formed an element called a regula. A regula was aligned under each triglyph of the Doric frieze. In addition, the underside of the projecting geison above the frieze had rectangular protrusions termed mutules that each had three rows of six guttae. These mutules were aligned above each triglyph and each metope.[1]

Architectural details: guttae | Thomas Jefferson's Monticello
https://www.monticello.org/site/blog-and-community/posts/architectural-details-guttae

As with so many other neo-classical details seen throughout Monticello Jefferson drew this one directly from Andrea Palladio’s Four Books of Architecture, which he reportedly referred to as “the Bible.”

... ... ...

And if you include the Dining Room and Tea Room too, the total runs to over 5,000 altogether! Amazing!  And this is just one tiny little detail when compared to the whole.

Unfortunately we don’t know who specifically turned and installed all these guttae.  But it’s possible that the enslaved craftsman Lewis (we only know his first name) had a hand in it because we know he was the one who turned all the balusters for the balustrade that goes around the roof.  But that’s another story.
