Odds and Ends

A  text only post, and about history, afield from fauna and flora, sort of...and grim, so dear readers, a caution to read on...

updates, corrections, and miscellaneous stuff!...

(oh!...with google, one can select highlight in blue a bit of text, and it will appear in the google search box above...click on search, or use return...most things here I haven't linked, but one can find them using this method...)

I was about to do this post, and it popped into my head to see if Fellini's Satyricon, the movie, is on youtube...it is...so I watched it, for the first time since I watched it in a theater in New York in Times Square...it was a kind of an afternoon date with a friend's girlfriend, who was a stewardess...before going in the theater, we had no idea what it was about, and after wards, walking to the subway past the porn shops, it was like, 'yep, it was like that back then'...back then being ancient Rome, 100 AD about...and back then being 1969...Satyricon was a Roman novel, one of the first novels ever written to survive from those times...the author was Petronius...something J. said to me has stayed with me all this time...the conversation had turned to her travels, and how I envied them...'the big cities, like Hong Kong...they're all the same...' she told me...

... ... ...

I haven't been able to find much about Ceres of late...like the string of photos of Pluto and Ceres trickled off...and more, I haven't been able to find any good comment threads...I think everyone is curious about these photos from outer space!...but I finally found a talkabout at the Coast to Coast site last night...the current photos waiting to be shown to the public, are under an embargo by Nature magazine...Nature is going to do a story, and the story has to go through peer reviews first, so Nature has asked NASA to put a hold on talking about and showing pics until the story is ready!...NASA has it that because the space crafts are so far out there, that it's taking time to process the photos...

My dog Maya's penchant for biting has a self similar condition in human beings...sometimes kids bite, and if after 30 months, a kid is still biting, it is recommended they get help...

The Pythagorians had a name for the tiniest particle...a Monad...

... ... ...

Messenger pigeons, doves, show up in three of the flood tales...compare Greece's Deucalion, Sumer's Gilgamesh, and Israel's Noah...a current story is that aborigines in Australia have an oral tradition stretching back over 9,000 years, and that tales of the Ocean rising rapidly back then can still be heard from them...

... ... ...

Deucalion's ark came to rest upon Mt. Parnassus, on the slopes of which is Delphi...

... ... ...

On top of Noah's ark was a little cube shaped building...the holy of holies in the Jerusalem Temple was a cube...on Delos, the sanctuary of Apollo was a cube...there's an old story of the Delian Cube...the oracle of Delphi was consulted by those on Delos about a plague...the Delphi oracle told them to double the Cube of Apollo's sanctuary using just ruler and compass...this is a famous mathematical puzzle like squaring the circle...

... ... ...

one cell divides, and makes just two more identical in size...sometimes in the Valley I would contemplate pine needles...how they are all the same length...and make like globes...I took to stylizing them by drawing a circle with many spokes...

The Bible stories, the parables, and such, are puzzling, and cryptic, because that's how we best learn...by studying puzzles...that, and we just like puzzles!

... ... ...

The omphalos stones are sometimes thought to be from meteorites...sacred stones are common in old temples as focal points of worship...the Kaabba famously for it's Black Stone...and the Kaabba is a cube!

... ... ...

Pillars and Trees of Life, which look pillar like, are an ancient motif...the Djad pillar of ancient Egypt one example...likely they represent the axis of the earth...the earth spinning...the circumambulations of worshipers at the Kaabbaa cube a representation too?

... ... ...

The Dogon had it that thought alone could alter reality...

... ... ...

I happened on a clip of a tour group around an Egyptian guide who was going on about Tesla and many things...this with the Pyramids in the background...he has it that there are specifically 360 senses!

... ... ...

the tour groups now traveling around the ancient monuments carry with them the 'fringe' lore of New Agers...they all watch and listen to Coast to Coast it seems!

... ... ...

chicken embryos get their nourishment from the egg yoke...the egg white is like a cushion protection, and dries up, withers away, as the baby chicken matures...(my sister caught this!)

I wondered if atoms have a spin, an axis too...and indeed they do...much to study with an 'atom's spin axis' search!

We set out about cock-crow, the moon was shining as bright as midday, and came to where the tombstones are. My man stepped aside amongst them, but I sat down, singing, and commenced to count them up. When I looked around for my companion, he had stripped himself and piled his clothes by the side of the road. My heart was in my mouth, and I sat there while he pissed a ring around them and was suddenly turned into a wolf! Now don't think I'm joking, I wouldn't lie for any amount of money, but as I was saying, he commenced to howl after he was turned into a wolf, and ran away into the forest.

Delian League

A  text only post, and about history, afield from fauna and flora, sort of...and grim, so dear readers, a caution to read on...

I happened once on a story in National Geographic about an ancient shipwreck off the coast of France...and the old jars, amphora, brought up had a seal on them, a dolphin entwined around an anchor...I forget how I got from there to a mosaic floor on the Island of Delos showing a dolphin around an anchor (maybe it was the same issue?)...it was a Nat Geo story too...we'd saved all our Nat Geos...and at the time, I'd just invested funds in a Mac Plus, a laser printer, a modem, and software like Word, and Aldus Pagemaker...I had in mind to self publish my poems...and soon discovered the modem made the laser printer superfluous!...anyway, the packaging of Pagemaker had the story of the dolphin around the anchor...it is the colophon of Aldus, an early renaissance printer...

quote

The famous "Dolphin and Anchor" device of Aldus appeared for only the second time in the second state of the 1502 Dante, and was used subsequently in all his editions. It is the symbol of the ancient proverb "Festina lente" (Hurry up slowly) which Aldus had taken as a motto as early as 1499, and seems to have regularly expounded to his friends.

The sequence of reading on the software box about Aldus, finding the shipwreck story, finding the mosaic on Delos, happened like one right after another one afternoon...it gave me goosebumps!....and I've been a fan of the Island of Delos ever since!

Not likely I will ever visit the Greek Islands, but I'm having much fun finding the tourists' and archaeologists' and such web pages and youtubes!

Delos, like Delphi, is sacred to Apollo, and here's the legend:

quote

Hera banned Leto from giving birth on "terra firma", the mainland, any island at sea, or any place under the sun.[19] Antoninus Liberalis is not alone in hinting that Leto came down from the land of the Hyperboreans in the guise of a she-wolf, or that she sought out the "wolf-country" of Lycia, formerly called Tremilis, which she renamed to honour wolves that had befriended her[20] for her denning. Another late source, Aelian, also links Leto with wolves and Hyperboreans:

Wolves are not easily delivered of their young, only after twelve days and twelve nights, for the people of Delos maintain that this was the length of time that it took Leto to travel from the Hyperboreoi to Delos."[21]
Most accounts agree that she found the barren floating island of Delos, still bearing its archaic name of Asterios, which was neither mainland nor a real island, and gave birth there, promising the island wealth from the worshippers who would flock to the obscure birthplace of the splendid god who was to come. The island was surrounded by swans. As a gesture of gratitude, Delos was secured with four pillars and later became sacred to Apollo.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leto

unquote

oh...that version with wolves and Hyperboreans is new to me!...somewhere I have it that the dolphin represents Apollo, and the anchor represents the four pillars that anchor the island in this version...oh...and in reading, it comes back like a dream, about the anchors I mean...and I find they weren't anchors, but rather ingots of iron...

quote

The members were given a choice of either offering armed forces or paying a tax to the joint treasury; most states chose the tax.[48] League members swore to have the same friends and enemies, and dropped ingots of iron into the sea to symbolize the permanence of their alliance. The ingots of iron were cast into the ocean because the oath the league members swore stipulated that their allegiance would not end, or be otherwise broken, until the iron floated to the surface. In other words, that they had made a pact perceived to be eternal.

The Delian League is, of course, a model for modern NATO...

quote

The spectacular defeat of the Persians at Salamis in 480 led to the formation of a more permanent alliance. Three years later negotiations, led by Aristides of Athens, began on the Greek island of Delos. The result was the Delian League, a sort of ancient equivalent to NATO.

Don't know but the wars in the Middle East now are too an equivalent of the wars back in the Delian League's days!

quote

Last but not least, enhancing security and stability collectively by forming Alliances has deep roots in Greek culture. Ιn ancient Greece, Athens took the initiative to form the first long lasting Alliance, the Delian League which has frequently been described as having many similarities with modern NATO. Greece, due to her geopolitical position and regional role, her active participation in all international organizations, her initiatives, her bilateral forms of cooperation and her explicit political will for peace, plays an important role in supporting the NATO of the 21st century.

One of the earliest dolphin stories is Homer's 'Hymn to Apollo', which describes how the god Apollo founded the temple at Delphi after a journey which took him all over Greece in search of a suitable site. Eventually he chose a lonely cave nestling at the foot of Mount Parnassos, which was guarded by the dragoness Python, whom he slew with an arrow from his silver bow.
After killing the dragoness, Apollo set off to hijack a Cretan merchant ship, leaping aboard the boat in the guise of a dolphin. Terrified, the crew huddled below deck while the dolphin Apollo directed the winds to blow the ship right around the Greek coast and into the harbour below Delphi. Then, according to Homer's poem, the sun god instructed his hostages to live in the new temple and serve him as priests:And whereas I first, in the misty sea, sprung aboard the swift ship in the guise of a dolphin, therefore pray to me as Apollo Delphinus.

Omphalos

A  text only post, and about history, afield from fauna and flora, sort of...and grim, so dear readers, a caution to read on...

So, so, I was gathering quarters for the laundry from the five gallon bucket in the garage, and looked about the dishevelment for a book to take along, and sighted...The Mystery of the Oracles by Philip Vandendberg...having left off yesterday's post with mention of Pausanias  and the Omphalos Stone at Delphi, at the Laundry Mat I opened the book to page 100, the chapter on Delphi...and since have been reading the book, and looking about the web...

I've read before about the Omphalos Stone...cultures all over the world have them...the Omphalos at Delphi is sometimes portrayed with two Eagles...

quote

In early historical times, people thought the world was a disc surrounded by the ocean, and that the omphalos, or navel, was the middle point of the disc.  In order to find the middle point, Zeus had sent out two eagles.

"The Egyptian spend much time on pigeons. As you go by rail to Cairo, and as you ascend the river, you are never out of site of a mud-built village. The only story that is raised above the ground floor is the Dovecote
. This, therefore is the only object in the village, which attracts the eye of the passer-by. In the Delta the fashion appears to be to raise a
mud tower full of earthenware pots for the pigeons to breed in. These are inserted-of course, lying horizontally in the mud, which the tower is built.

... ... ...

From the summit of the Prophylaea of the grand ptolemaic temple of Edfou, I counted about forty of these dovecotes. The number of domestic pigeons in Egypt must be of several times as great as that of the population.

I...I hadn't thought to find that...was just looking for how the ancient Egyptians used pigeons for surveying, or something like that...the omphalos stone in ancient Egypt is depicted with two pigeons, or birds, perched on either side...the omphalos in Delphi with two eagles, and omphalos stones often show a netting over them...which in a way resembles the openings in these dovecotes!...omphalos are much studied and thought upon, even in ancient times, and just what they are is something of a mystery...

Hundreds of ancient columbaria have been found in Israel, a few dozens of them in and around the city of Jerusalem. Most of them were built in manmade caves. The others were built above the ground in the form of towers. In the ancient picture the Egyptian is leaning over a short column like stone with a round oval top, much like an omphalos.

Oh...found it...read it a long time ago in the Mysteries of the Great Pyramid book by Tompkins, and here it is quoted in the Sirius book--a re-visit!

quote

In Plate 12 the reader may see for himself the surviving omphalos stones of Delphi and of Delos86 - both of which are spread with 'nets' representing a latitudinal and longitudinal geodetic mesh.26 It is this mesh which is probably carried at all times by Oannes (see Plates 6, 7, 8 and 9) as a 'basket'.

For the 'warp and woof of the sacred basket of Oannes/Dagon - surviving as the lyknos basket of Greek Demeter (who succeeded the Philistine fish-tailed Dagon as agricultural deity, keeping Dagon's 'basket') - represent perfectly the warp and woof of latitude and longitude. The Dogon have traditions of the religious and mythological importance of 'warp and woof in weaving, and of sacred baskets 'which are not baskets', all of which may be found described in many places in Le Renard Pale.

In Plate 12 the reader may see the omphalos stone found by Reisner in the great temple of Amon at Thebes in Egypt. This stone was placed in the main room of the temple where the meridian and parallel actually cross.2' In Figure 23 is a reproduction of a figure from an Egyptian papyrus of omphalos stones

with two doves perched on top. These two doves are the standard glyph meaning 'to lay out parallels and meridians'.28 They are the 'two doves' who flew to Dodona from Thebes according to the account of Herodotus.2' Of course, the two doves are in fact carrier-pigeons. To keep in touch over such enormous distances, and to maintain prompt communication between oracle-centers which was essential to the successful operation of a coherent 'world-wide' religious network spread over thousand of miles, the only available means were carrier-pigeons.

The Oracle Centers

http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/universo/siriusmystery/siriusmystery06.htm

unquote

It was a good trick...the priests at Delphi were getting information from all over the world secretly with the pigeons, and when Kings and such came to Delphi for  oracular advice, they could come up with answers based on their pre-knowledge...

quote

I am informed that carrier-pigeons could fly from Thebes to Dodona in about a day. To travel such a distance oneself by sea and land would take months. Daily communication between the Egyptian religious centre of Thebes and all its oracle 'colonies' would have been transacted by the very carrier-pigeons whom we see plainly depicted on omphalos stones by both Greek (see Plate 12) and Egyptian (see additionally Figure 24) representations and documented clearly by Herodotus.

Also, I should imagine such instantaneous 'news coverage' would surreptitiously find its way into the oracular pronouncements at the various centers and exercise a considerable political influence. For after all, there was hardly a king or potentate anywhere in the ancient world who would disregard an oracular order 'from the gods'. Probably the political forces were totally ignorant of the 'hot news line' ticking away secretly in the local oracle centre's temple complex.

The last oracle to be made at Delphi was to Julian the Apostate, the self same Roman ruler that attempted to re-build the Temple at Jerusalem, but was thwarted by earthquake and flames erupting from the ground...

quote

The Oracle of Apollo at Delphi dates back to 1400 BC. Julian the Apostate (331/332– - 26 June 363), a Roman emperor, tried to revive classical Greek culture in the mid 4-th century AD. He is said to have consulted the Oracle of Delphi. The Pythia responded with the following oracle:

Tell to the king that the carven hall is fallen in decay;
Apollo has no chapel left, no prophesying bay,
No talking spring. The stream is dry that had so much to say.

And that site has this too...I didn't know Delphi is a word for Dolphin!

...and in as much as at the first on the hazy sea
I sprang upon the swift ship in the form of a dolphin,

shall be called Delphinius and overlooking for ever.

It's Thursday...

A  text only post, and about history, afield from fauna and flora, sort of...and grim, so dear readers, a caution to read on...

I never thought of it as such, but the mind's eye can be considered another sense, just like hearing, and taste, and touch, and sight, and such...and a study just came out that finds some people don't have a mind's eye...Tesla had an exceptional mind's eye...I consider my own average...there's  probably a range to this, like acuity in eyesight...

from post Trial and Error

unquote

After I wrote that, and kept seeing it as I looked for miss spellings in the post, I wondered about what I was saying there more and more...the 'sense' of what I'm saying is that we develop senses much as we develop bone and flesh and muscle and nerves and such...and a wonder is how many senses are there?...millions and millions I imagine, an infinitude, but that's for another post!...

Looking, trying to imagine, how cells diverge into becoming bone and flesh and muscle and nerve cells, I looked about and found some takes on what happens in a chicken egg...the chicken grows in the yellow yoke, and the surrounding white part provides nourishment...and I got the impression that all of the yoke cells were undifferentieated to start, they hadn't decided yet what to be, a beak cell or a wing cell or a foot cell and such...and I likely have that wrong...but I imagine that in the yoke, something calls out to all the cells, and they all at once begin to go their separate ways...

"cells split and say c u when I get there...'

well, that's dumb...but...brb...

oh!...wait...a diversion...a search for 'omphalos' brought this up!

Chateaubriand wrote in his 1802 book, Génie du christianisme (Part I Book IV Chapter V): "God might have created, and doubtless did create, the world with all the marks of antiquity and completeness which it now exhibits." Rabbi Dovid Gottlieb supports a similar position, arguing further that the evidence for an old universe[4] is strong: "The bones, artifacts, partially decayed radium, potassium-argon, uranium, the red-shifted light from space, etc.– all of it points to a greater age which nevertheless is not true."

...  ... ...

Though Gosse's original Omphalos hypothesis specifies a popular creation story, others have proposed that the idea does not preclude creation as recently as five minutes ago, including memories of times before this created in situ.[8] This idea is sometimes called "Last Thursdayism" by its opponents, as in "the world might as well have been created last Thursday."

author is suggesting that the barbarians were a precursor to 'unbarbaric' citizens of nation states...somewhere I have it that the Italian City States of the Renaissance were 'embryos' to Nation States, and Napoloen had a hand in that!...author covers a lot of ground, and I was trying to find his take on the 'omphalos syndrome', something I've never heard of, but come across searching for omphalos!

The Omphalos Syndrome

Something happens to imperial capitals, something psychological and, over time, corrosive and incapacitating. It happens when the conviction takes hold that the capital is the source and focal point of reality — that nothing is more important than what happens there, and that no ideas or perceptions are more important than those of its elites.

Woe Betide

A  text only post, and about history, afield from fauna and flora, sort of...and grim, so dear readers, a caution to read on...

'Oh woe betide, if it makes sense...'

Well, that popped into my head, thinking on 'a sense of sense' to add to the list of senses (see yesterday's post)...and I guess what makes 'sense of sense' when we talk is our 'sense of grammar'!

quote

comment above is of interest too. I am also conscious that there are two senses in which woe betide is used. 1. May woe betide him if he harms anyone i.e. as a threat. and 2. Woe betide you if you cross the old sod i.e be careful

(from a discussion of the meaning and sense of 'woe betide')

It's not a phrase I use, and I find it is archaic, so not many use it, but I see it often enough to have a sense of it!...and thinking about the dust ups in Greece, 'woe betide' kind of came to mind...

and now there is another word I just see that maybe I can use here in the post...'parse'...brb...one meaning of parse is to 'examine in a minute way'...that's fine!...in the Pearls in the Dirac Sea post, this caught my eye...

The movie Exodus is a long movie, and covers a lot of ground...and there are glimpses of things in it...that the British had a camp for Jews on Cypress is self similar to the prison camps they made for the leftist partisans in Greece...that they enlisted the Greeks who had fought for the Germans during the German occupation, to fight the leftist Greeks after Germany's defeat was a political tactic to keep Russia out of Greece...Europe was being divided up, and Churchill wanted Greece to be in the Western half...to further their ends, the British had to make prison camps not unlike the prison camps of the Germans...they even used the same Greeks the Germans had used to maintain the German camps!...it's a tangle...another scene in Exodus has a German arrive in the Arab village, and tell the Arab leader, the child hood friend of Paul Newman, to prepare to do battle with the Jews (Newman, wounded, is being concealed in another room)...the German is a cohort of the Grand Mufti...

In 1941, Haj Amin al-Husseini fled to Germany and met with Adolf Hitler, Heinrich Himmler, Joachim Von Ribbentrop and other Nazi leaders. He wanted to persuade them to extend the Nazis’ anti-Jewish program to the Arab world.

The German in Exodus looks like one out of the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark...and one might ask, how is he active in Israel/Palestine in 1947?!...answer is the Germans of the Reich dispersed, shopping their skills and experience to other countries...German scientists came to the United States under Operation Paperclip, some went to Russia, both were supplied with captured V2 missiles to continue experimenting with...some similar German rocket scientists went to Egypt, but were driven out by the efforts of the Mossad...

Operation Damocles was a covert campaign of the Israeli Mossad in August 1962 targeting German scientists and technicians, formerly employed in Nazi Germany's rocket program, who were developing rockets for Egypt at a military site known as Factory 333. According to Otto Joklik, an Austrian scientist involved with the project, the rockets being developed were programmed to use a radioactive waste.[1]
