Wind Blown Out Surf

Notes: out and back to Huntington State Beach, Jetties...still a Saturday day gathering though overcast and cold...must say I envy the group gatherings around the fire rings...anyway, a carry over from yesterday's notes: reflections and shadows...Gurney does a bit on reflections, see: google search Gurney shadows reflections...he has a blogger blog too!

and though it began, it seems, same as mine about, 2007, it is enormously bigger!...he hasn't missed a day, nor are there any weak, 'just did it to keep the string going', posts...apparently he never naps, sleeps, just goof off and daydream, as he is a professional illustrator in his day job, and an exceptional one...this is not unusual for professional artists...they are like souls obsessed!...and he stays within the boundaries...in the tradition of other illustrators...nothing fringe...or some such...anyway, the Skidkids at Aliso pic has their shadows, and their reflections...it the Sun would come back out, I could clarify this in an eye blink...one would think the Shorebird, I should know name, would be casting a sunset shadow, as in the foreground footprints, but no, shadows over clear water disappear....and reflections are straight down-180s...some in my pics distorted because of the lens...inktober prompt "Dig"...sat and waited for a sand crab digger to come by, and one obliged...then left off before Sun reached horizon, as I couldn't see the horizon, though Catalina plain enough to see...it was chilly and windy...listened to Dodgers...oh...brb...oh!...they're still playing...middle of eighth...Dodgers 7-6...roll out for a snack and listen...bbk with report...bk...Rays 8-7...go figure...

Balboa, Reflections

Notes: out and back to Balboa Pier...overcast...sat awhile and tried to sketch Inktober prompt "Rip"...a surfing term for doing really really well on a really really good wave!...now, now and then, big sets are coming in...this seen at Aliso and here at Balboa...swells from northwest in Fall and Winter?...I remember in Fall, one drifted South, and in summer, North...an annoyance, as one had to keep making a long walk back to where one started!....anyway, took a pier pic, a wave pic, and scratched a sun behind the clouds pic...and paddled over to the Fun Zone for the Idea!...when I did the Bench charcoal sketch at Aliso, it came home to me the perspective lines-some lines on the cement, even the recession of one leg under the Bench...thought and thought...this is called the one point perspective...lines converging on a central point in the distance, as the Sun on the horizon...been noting the long shadows on the beach doing this...they all point back to the Sun...and the distant traffic lights of the converging street scenes on the out and backs!...we live with this every moment!...then, then I looked at one of my pics of shadows on water, with reflections there too, and, and the reflections were different!...after some reflection, I realized the viewer is the the one point vanishing point!...(NOPE: the reflections always go straight down, like things on top of mirror...R.I.P. the Idea!😃) all the reflections converging on me...so, soh, today on the out, I was hoping for bright sun and lots of shadows and reflections from the sailboats with their masts at Balboa...no luck, no shadows to speak of!...the overcast, but the reflections still about...pic up of the mooring pillars by the Pavilion have the Idea...snacked hot dog, fries, soda, thereabout considering...then, then saw the Crystal Ball...I'm terrified of Fortune Tellers...true or not, for good or ill, what they tell, it becomes like a focal point magnet grabbing at one's imaginings, a vanishing point!...kept my head, and didn't spend ten bucks...set aside wondering where my efforts are converging too...the three perspective points are the horizon, the zenith, and, I dunno, lateral?, (there might be more!) to the side-bottom pic...Art History has these wonderful takes on how artists first noted the perspective points...Giotto famously....edit:  Looking at reflection photographs on web, the reflections go straight down...so, soh they dont converge on me as the vanishing point...I have that wrong it seems...but what is going on with mooring poles?...those reflections look to be coming at me, or some such...hmmph...update tomorrowmorrow!

Notes: out and back to the Wedge, Balboa...thought about inktober prompt "Sleep" on the way, imagined sleeping Buddha, and, and put Buddha atop the breakwater at the Wedge!...overcast, so no Sunset Spotlight...now, couple posts back, Lobster, researching references for Lobster, half men half lobster, I found there was such in Greek Mythology...brb...

that, that's what happens with the waves at the Wedge...at first a swell will break/meet the breakwater rocks, then it will rebound back, reforming...thenabout, it meets an incoming swell/break, and, whoosh...a skimboarder gets rocketed up...what Rocket was about...what the kids do is run like crazy down the steep beach...throw the board forward, hop on, and their momentum carries them over flat water to where that first wave is rebounding...this they catch, and ride it into the much bigger incoming swell/break...simple when seen, not so simple to describe!...Aliso Beach has this phenomena too!...at the very spot I did my plein airs of the Palace!...oh, I haven't eaten all day...time for a snack...Dodgers were getting wooped...brb...they have slim chance...Rays 6-3...eighth inning...bbk with report...Rays 6-4...

Sunset Family, Huntington State Beach at Gilbert entrance

Notes: out and back to Huntington State Beach...at Gilbert about...parked, and listened to Dodgers and Rays pre-game while sketching arms and legs of folk going by on the promenade...I can recall the gesture of an arm, or leg, details, sense it, feel it, and if I take in the whole figure's posture, that too...but all the details, not...but I'm getting better at making things up, and can like extrapolate the whole figure in detail...more inspiration from Alphonso Dunn's tutorials on youtube...like to get both his books and Jake Parker's...see how much both of then lifted from Loomis!...Sun getting lower, so paddled out to the waves' edge, sat, and thought, 'this will be tough for the SunsetSpotlight pics, not many folk about'...but then the whole family moved into the Spotlight!...admiration has many forms!...on the back, Dodgers took a big lead in the fifth...see how they did...brb...yep...Dodgers 8-3...Kershaw got some support...oh...Inktober prompt, Coral...

Dizzy

Pumpkins, Ruby's Fish and Chips, Balboa Pier

Notes: out and back to Balboa Pier...made it to the end of the Pier, finally, for a snack at Ruby's...Fish and Chips...tried for Fisherfolk pics...not much...then made a desperate trot back to the Sunset Spot at the beginning of the Pier...generic, but, success!...Pumpkins on the out, stopped at Foster Farms fruit/vegetable stand...think it's called Foster's...??? (Smith's!)...on Ellis in Fountain Valley...hard to see/find from road...Halloween Display up...no trick or treaters this year?...sunset from home that day...no evening out and back...I've tried to imagine where Sunrise happens over an ocean water scene...Bolsa Chica has views East over the Bay, but the foothills take away the horizon...I'll have to study the map!

Trap

Huntington State Beach Jetties, Blimp

Notes: out and back to Huntington State Beach, Brookhurst/Jetties...the tide was out...way out...sat with everyone on the beach, then moved out onto the exposed beach...Inktober prompt trap...had in mind Lobster Trap...drew from memory Alphonso Dunn's proportion tutorial, then took a leap at the lobster in the trap...web searching half man half lobster brought up something really neat!...for post soon..so, soh, there were people posing all over the exposed sand...some compulsion to just sit and roll around in the soft waves...I've long known we're basking seals/walruses at heart!...anyway, I was content, and then, and then I saw the blimp!...'it's going to cross the orange ball sun'...anxiety set in...I wanted movie clip, and still pic...lucky to remember I can do that, take a still while filming...did it all the time in the Valley...but rust all over my camera techniques!...sooo, the blimp obliged, Sun too, and right at the end of the clip this bean pole with a skate board under his arm enters the frame...deleted from clip up...and his on about becomes a show...he's a sun worshipping yogi of some sort!...stretches and arm raises...he has some command of lore, that arm position is an ancient Egyptian motif!...bit over the top, but there he is, included with the other 'arms up'!...oh...almost forgot, had to check, had listened on the radio coming back but left off to post...Dodger 4-3...onward to the World Series!...
