OTI: My Blog Misses Me:11/17/19

Open To Interpretation

quote

The line, "What will you lend on an old golden rule" is one that has baffled many listeners, including Barbra Streisand, who during rehearsals in 1999 refused to sing it until someone could explain to her what it meant. Her A&R man, Jay Landers, took action, calling the song's lyricist, Hal David, who was in China but got back to him right away (the prospect of Streisand singing his song was apparently quite an enticement).

When asked about the line, David replied, "It doesn't mean anything." He was simply filling in words to Bacharach's melody, figuring he would change it later. Bacharach liked it though, so they left it in.

When Landers got off the phone, he told Streisand, "It's one of those lines that's open to interpretation." That was good enough for her.

Notes:  Leastwise, I miss it...I've really gotten sidetracked posting to youtube comment threads...time I usually spend making my blog posts, has gone that away...it's, it's the political things going on...for a long while when I did my USS Panay blog I collected a lot of old lore, and that blended into my jfk times...I don't know if I qualify as a jfk buff...but thenabout, I collected more lore...but this was all like almost twenty years ago...but the youtube algorythm, 'recommended for you' about around the time of the all star baseball season break put a link to McDuff, or Geroge Webb, vlogs on youtube, in my feed bowl, and it was a live feed, and in the chat, SOCONY, came up, Standard Oil Of New York, and, and then Jardine Matheson came up...go figure!...when the Panay was sunk that fateful day, 12/12/37, it was escorting SOCONY river boat tankers, and Jardine junks...it took me a long time to sort what they were about...so, so, now every morning, whenever,  I listen in to McDuff and George Webb, and drop comments in the comments and chat...a lot of the lore I picked up is being gone over all over again...so, so I try to fill in when I can...things in the news are really really messed up...I bought a drawing tablet, need to hook it up...so pics from it in the offing for the blog...basketball ref season about to begin...I have too much housecleaning maintenance to ever get done...otherwise, Maya, my dog, and I, are like, 'What's it all about Alfie?'...
