This group is dominated by the best known carving from Chalcatzingo: Monument 1, also known as "El Rey" (The King). "El Rey" is a life-size carving of a human-like figure seated inside a cave with a wide opening; the shape of the opening represents one-half of a quatrefoil. The point of view is from the side, and the entire cave appears cross-sectional, with the cave entrance is seen to the right of the figure. The cave entrance is as tall as the figure, and scroll volutes (perhaps indicating speech or perhaps wind) are issuing from it. The cave in which the figure sits is equipped with an eye, and its general shape could suggest that of a mouth.

The goddess Naunet and her male counterpart Nu represented the stagnant primeval water itself; Huh and his counterpart Hauhet represented the water's infinite extent; Kek and Kauket personified the darkness present within it; and Amun and Amaunet represented its hidden and unknowable nature, in contrast to the tangible world of the living.

Notes:...game on...on the radio...Marlins at Angels...top of fifth...Marlins 1-Angels 0...Quatrefoil!...found the word I was looking for in previous post...and there are lots of papers, not just the one I had happened on...aand most behind the paywalls...'ubiquitous quatrefoil"...yet another motif found here there and everywhere...searching I happened on a youtube vlogger going on about creation myth story motifs...story motifs I'm familiar with!...English majors study such...and the scholars collected stories from all over the world during the era of exploration...I have a book of Navajo Sandpainting motifs, and each painting has folk/myth story...for sometime...the art motifs need the story motifs to make any sense...and both come from times without writing...the ancient oral traditions lost...but what are records?...Sooners broke the record for games won in a row, but when asked about it, "We don't keep track of that, or read reports on our games-we're focused on winning..."...a paraphrase...baseball full of records...anyway, curious about creation myths, I found wiki's take on Ancient Egypt's...now, I've followed the mystery of the Pyramids, like everyone, and knew they represent the first mound of Earth that rose from the Ocean...and as it happened, I've been binge watching a youtube vlog about the history of the Earth-dinosaurs and all that...as a kid, I read all the books about dinosaurs, but then there weren't many...now, now there are a lot...same with ancient cultures...apparently, for a billion years of several, the climate was stable, and inhospitable, though bacteria thrived, and the Ocean was 'black'...and nothing lived on land...aand I suspect the cloud cover obscured the Sun...sooo, having read that, I happened on some of Egypt's creation myth that speaks of a black ocean, and the emergence of the Mound, and the Sun appearing...welp, that kind of happened...something caused the Earth's atmosphere to change to like what we have today...top of sixth...earlier, before the Black Ocean, there was the oxygen event...a long time that too...often reading the Creation Myths, there are similarities with the Creation Story science has cobbled together...which make me wonder, if something like out of Clan of the Cave Bear is at work...there, the heroine, in dream state, sees the ancient past...lol...our noggins are the 'cave' where resides the Witz monster, our mouths the opening that breaths...Mayan's noted winds come out of caves...our skulls our hut, canopy...the Romans preserved the hut of Romulus and Remus...Mohammad met under a canopy, which became the model for Mosques...and I've gone on and on about the canopy on the Narmer palette and Moche sacrifice rituals...oh, I suppose Jesus being buried in a cave covered with a round stone a fit too!...the Shabaka Stone has one of the Egyptian creation myths on it...there were a few myths that coexisted...more than a few!...it was repurposed as a mill stone, or a foundation for a column...Egyptians were obsessed with their Creation stories...all the paintings and monuments...complex as the ones of modern science...I can only kinda skip around it...myths and science...came home with an up to date Algebra 1 book...nope...was never much for math and languages!...like the Navajo Sandpaintings, I sometimes think the Egyptians started out with sandpainting; like the Navajo, the paintings go with a story....I don't know if wiki's wordy takes represent how the originals came across....that Chalcatzingo Monument gives pause...it's the Quatrefoil in profile...a 'cave'...and there's a figure sitting on a square, an on and on about Sumerian and Egyptian sitting on a block square...I dunno...the frets represent clouds...Mountains, Mayans thought, breath clouds from caves...bottom of seventh...Marlins 2-Angels 0...Pyramids are mountains with caves inside...bottom of eighth...aaand, Anton just posted to his youtube vlog a take on cells and beginning of life...hmmph...seems we're the beginning of "reproductive intelligence", as once upon a time cells figured things out, as far as they could!...stories and motifs grow and survive...a human being just one example of what reproductive intelligence can be!...long live baseball!...top of ninth...lead off hit...double play...aand Angels about to lose a streak of ninety games with a score-no shut outs...Neto walks...a hit!...runners at second and third...Trout up...0-1...0-2...1-2...2-2...fly out...Marlins 2-Angels 0...

Olmec Earth Monster

Although it has been considered possible that certain elements originating in the Olmec culture of Mexico were added to older Peruvian traditions to produce the Chavin civilization, the radiocarbon dates on Olmec and Chavin make them approximately coeval. A black-ware bottle found at Kotosh, in the central Peruvian highlands, bears a design of an ear of maize, a motif of probable Olmec origin. Since this vessel was from a phase immediately preceding the Chavin horizon, it is suggested that the Olmec culture began earlier than did Chavin and, in fact, could have been the progenitor for civilization in the Andean Area.

Both Lespinasse and his brother, who offered the stone to the Metropolitan Museum on his behalf, noted that the stone was similar to a keystone at the summit of an arch. A reanalysis of the architectural sculpture recorded at Uxmal in the years after the consul's original visit, however, reveals that the Met's block formed part of a monumental mosaic "mask," an anthropomorphic portrait of a mountain deity, or witz in Mayan.

Notes:...game on...on the radio...top of seventh...Marlins at Angels...Marlins 2-Angels 3...runner on second, one out...browse had news of return of Olmec monolith to Mexico, called the Earth Monster...relief pitching shaky...yep...Home Run...Marlins 4-Angels 3...Ohtani no longer pitcher of record...he could have got a win, after a shaky outing of his own-dogged two defensive plays: an overthrow to first, and a slow get to first...otherwise he was his usual remarkable self...Sooners won!...KH tied it up in seventh against Clemson, JB in relief the last three innings, 7,8,9, last two extra...Trout up...fly out...I had just been reading a paper about the motif-here the Earth Monster mouth...Ohtani steals a base...on on FC?...Renfroe up...oh, trying to find the paper, I found the one about the maize motif...it's by Michael Coe, famous for Mayan study..."progenitor for civilization in the Andean Area"...hmmph...Urshela hits a home run!...Mariners 4, Angels 4...aaand, his paper is behind paywall...but that's neat...he's not a "fringe" scholar, and here he hints at connection between the Americas...but then he hints at connection with China, too...hmmph...the Olmec Earth Monster related to the Witz monster..and that four lobed motif, like a smoothed out chacana?, I dunno...I need that paper, a re-search!...look 'till game ends, maybe get lucky...top of ninth...Mariners up...neat game...bottom of ninth...Trout up...base hit...Ohtani up...fly out...to top of tenth!...woops...Moniak dogs a basket catch...Mariners 5-Angels 4...Angel's errors their undoing in games...double play...Angels get a chance...to bottom of tenth...the Earth Monster and Witz monster are the same, it seems...an entry to the "underworld"...oh, heck...inning ending double play reviewed and overturned...another run...Mariners 6, Angels 4...and two more come in on another hit...two runs unearned, and that dropped fly ball, and, Angels leading majors in errors!...fump...Mariners 8-Angels 4...Urshela with an rbi hit...Mariners 8-Angels 5...fly out...two down...Neto up...ground out...Mariners 8-Angels 5...

Laguna Hotel Painting

Sandpiper Inn, Corona del Mar

Oh, the Old Greek, who managed the place,
Who in childhood experienced the German camps,
Hired the loveliest girls to work the front desk...
A porter, I was there to be near the sea,
But incidentally took note of the girls'
Tales of nightclubbing in Laguna, Hotel Laguna,
And wished they'd take me along.

Notes:...Game On...on the radio...Trout ties it up with a home run...Angels 1, Orioles 1...top of fourth...Ohtani up...rolled out to Goodwill, and back with a treasure!...can't discern artists name, but he or she knew their stuff!...very unusual for an original piece to make it to the Goodwill sale...when I first saw it, I though  it a bit of a mess...but it sinks in...oh, my thought, that's the Laguna Hotel!...just with that it was a purchase-ten bucks...it's painted with one strokes and dabs and touches...that alone a marvel, more so is the lights and darks, the chiroscuro...not many artists understand lights and darks, something acquired by study of the Old Masters...bottom of fourth...in dim light, it looks great, very night light time...a trick to make a painting 'read' in dim light...and one is lured in to see the details, and there are vignettes, paintings within the painting, to explore...it looks "film noir", mysterious-artist an illustrator?...eventually I'll find out who...how'd my poem go?...brb...lol...Orioles scoring...Angels 1, Orioles 3...oh, I have to go out in the garage...shelves to clean...now with new roof, safe to store art out there...a project, house is all a clutter with art I've collected from Goodwill and art materials...bbk with game report...

Cow Trough

Notes:...Game on....on the radio...wash machine on too, a "wip"-work in progress...got a lot of those, the old house demands...feel like Sherazade...so long as I have a repair, a project to do, I have a roof over my head...recurring dreams of being roofless, behind in the rent, some such...quick claimed the old house to my niece...put the whole caboodle in her care-hence the new roof, and a hand me down washer and drier from my sister's house-sister now moved in with my niece!...and not feeling well, my niece too!..she a caregiver now much as I was with Pop, sooo, after a fashion, I am in her care too...my sister completely so...anyway, the laundry sink doesn't drain fast enough, so I bought a cow trough, those big tanks they sell for garden plants at Home Depot, drilled a hole thru the window pane, ran the drain hose outside  to the trough where it sits on the porch...THIS took some thought and doing...thought is to use the grey water for gardening, which is okay to do so long as soap is biodegradable...found soap at HD after much searching...the trough bottom has a fitting I can hook a garden hose to, and that now goes to house side garden to be...I was all set, I thought, but washer wouldn't fill, kept clicking off...something to do with lid...press on the lid and it might work...aaand, discovered the lid switch had fallen thru its hole...not working at all then...looked repair up on youtube...holy smoke!...looked to be I'd have to disassemble the entire washer...on closer study, I found one could reach under the top and get to it-that cleared up a deep "tingw" (this is never gonna work) funk...oh, funk, Orioles with a home run...Angels 3, Orioles 7...I snapped lid switch back to its slot, puzzled awhile over the dials...and got the machine going-working at present...fifth inning I think...sixth bottom...it was just Angels 3, Oriole 4, but now..."Hey, Big Dog, hear that bird?...'huh?'..."What bird is that?"...went out front to view progress...trough one third full...a lot of water!...and not draining thru the fitting and hose, a mystery that(does drain, slowly)...and, looks to be a vagabond on his bicycle out front getting my attention...lol...I ask him if he lost his bird..."What's the bird saying?" he says..."Mocking Bird!", over on top the telephone pole."...I point..."Sure enough, Big Dog!" and off he rides....Ohtani up...a pause to make a snack...top of ninth...two down, three down in a hurry...Angels 3, Orioles 7...

Iberians

So how did Cleveland land on Guardians as its new team name? The new mascot pays homage to the Guardians of Traffic statues near Progressive Field in Cleveland, located on the Hope Memorial Bridge. Cleveland owner Paul Dolan noted Friday he hopes the name Guardians helps "unify our fans and city.

According to all the indications, the large boar sculptures and the bulls at Guisando, near Ávila, are of Celtic origin. The Iberian culture is represented by three sculptures of female figures - the Lady of Elx, the Lady of Cerro de los Santos and the Lady of Baza - that are currently on display at the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid.
