Zelig

Lure Wait Watch Chase Catch Return

update:  I don't know how accurate google viewer counter is, but on my blog here, a dozen viewers of a post is..a lot!...so when this post, Zelig, went over seventy, I have had the thought that something is amiss, like google searches are picking up a phrase or word...I try to keep posts here out of time out of place, with little in the way of reference to current things in popular culture, but I can do that, and have, in other blogs!...the text I've deleted, but saved, that was here, was more of the nature of my other blogs...hereabout I post pics and clips of fauna and flora...google searching memory will hang on, so my apologies to viewers that happen here on a search for what I deleted!, but saved..

update:  and now the view count (10/29) is over 175...maybe it's "Zelig" pulling in searches ..I dunno,,anyway, I'll put back the text I deleted...generally speaking, if I ever have more than a few viewers, I'm doing something wrong, by estimate!..just why I have that estimate, I'll leave to speculation!..(oh,,Nature personified is wildly popular, but Nature, no)....here again, the text...

I thought to look up William Tyndale, the translator of the Bible into English, for which he was strangled and burned at the stake...he had a determined purpose to make Scripture available to every plow boy...today, Oct. 6, the anniversary of his death, was noted in the web 'this day in history' bit when I came online, and I diverted!...and from Tyndale to Cardinal Wolsey and Sir Thomas Moore and hair shirts and to Ivan the Terrible, and his black garbed black horsed cohorts, which he himself thought out of hand, and so had them disbanded, and put the penalty of death on even mentioning their name, which he had named!, and to a painting of these cohorts, and an image search of the artist, and painting in Omsk museum, and that museum's collection in google images, many fine paintings, and scrolling I came on pic of skull in display case, terribly deformed, like the Inca skulls, and others, and so I took a breath, and thought, here I go again into ufos, once more into the breach!, and happened on while doing Omsk Skull search what I once must have read but didn't take much note of, though I did come away from Herodotus with a fascination for the terseness of the Scythians...anyway...

"14.  I will pass over the smaller differences among the nations, but will now treat of such as are great either from nature, or custom; and, first, concerning the Macrocephali  [tribe or `nation' said to be living beyond the Bosphorus / Black Sea or maybe even further i.e Scythians - RD]  There is no other race of men which have heads in the least resembling theirs.

At first, usage was the principal cause of the length of their head, but now nature cooperates with usage.  They think those the most noble who have the longest heads.

It is thus with regard to the usage:  immediately after the child is born, and while its head is still tender, they fashion it with their hands, and constrain it to assume a lengthened shape by applying bandages and other suitable contrivances whereby the spherical form of the head is destroyed, and it is made to increase in length." - Hippocrates (c. 400 BCE)

Oh, that's in Hippocrates, which I read too...awhile ago....

While I was reading about Tyndale, whose effort did much to make the modern English we speak sound and look the way we speak it,  which wasn't his prime intention, that being to make modern Scripture sound and look the way we regard it, which he accomplished too!, and reading about this, I thought, how like Muir!  Muir was trying to 'translate' Nature, his primary effort the story of how Glaciers made the Valley.

But the diversion brought me to the elongated skulls of the Scythians, and of course the Phrygian Caps would have fit nicely over such long skulls!  These caps the subject of my Pileus post of a few weeks back.

Now, the Omsk skulls were found in Siberia near a town notable for being an enclave of Hindus surrounded by Christians and Islamists, and I suppose some left over indigenous pagan sorts....

Lets start this journey into the unknown in a small village called Okunevo in the Omsk Province, 155 miles (250 km) north of the city Omsk, in the heart of Siberia. The river that runs through this village is called the Tara a name which is Hindu in origin and may also be, as I speculated years ago, the name of an extraterrestrial goddess. The reason Omsk is called that name is because it was built at the OM River. OM is another word derived from Hinduism. It is in fact Hinduisms most important word as it is the name or sound of God.

Zelig is my niece's German Shepard, and I thought to post up "Dog" as this post's title as a bookend post to previous post "Cat"...I was house and pet sitting in Bakersfield a couple weeks back...some pics and clips from rollabouts thenabout to post up...

some Tyndale quotes:

"They have ordained that no man shall look on the Scripture, until he be noselled in heathen learning eight or nine years and armed with false principles, with which he is clean shut out of the understanding of the Scripture."

After the harsh meeting with Bell and other church leaders, and near the end of Tyndale's time at Little Sodbury, John Foxe describes an argument with a "learned" but "blasphemous" clergyman, who had asserted to Tyndale that, "We had better be without God's laws than the Pope's." Tyndale responded: "I defy the Pope, and all his laws; and if God spares my life, ere many years, I will cause the boy that driveth the plow to know more of the Scriptures than thou dost!"[13][14]

Men in Black (MIB), in American popular culture and in UFO conspiracy theories, are men dressed in black suits who claim to be government agents who harass or threaten UFO witnesses to keep them quiet about what they have seen. It is sometimes implied that they may be aliens themselves.

Under conditions of mass terror, universal fear and denunciations, the apparatus of violence acquired an entire overwhelming influence on the political structure of the leadership. The infernal machine of terror escaped from the control of its creators. The final victims of the Oprichnina proved to be all of those who had stood at its cradle.[26]

The oprichniki are often described in semi-mythical terms, and it's easy to see why. They dressed in black: black clothes, black horses and black carriages. They used the broom and the dog's head as their symbols, one representing the 'sweeping away' of traitors, and the other 'snapping at the heels' of their enemies; it is possible that some oprichniks carried actual brooms and severed dogs heads.

Lady Jane was the 'this day in history' a few days back...thought to post up that diversion!

some Lady Jane quotes...

For when I am in the presence either of father or mother, whether I speak, keep silence, sit, stand or go, eat, drink, be merry or sad, be sewing, playing, dancing, or doing anything else, I must do it as it were in such weight, measure and number, even so perfectly as God made the world; or else I am so sharply taunted, so cruelly threatened, yea presently sometimes with pinches, nips and bobs and other ways (which I will not name for the honour I bear them) ... that I think myself in hell.[12]

Their execution was first scheduled for 9 February 1554, but was then postponed for three days so that Jane should get a chance to be converted to the Catholic faith. Mary sent her chaplain John Feckenham to Jane, who was initially not pleased about this.[27] Though she would not give in to his efforts "to save her soul", she became friends with him and allowed him to accompany her to the scaffold.[28]

"The traitor-heroine of the Reformation", as historian Albert Pollard called her,[33] was merely 16 or 17 years old at the time of her execution. During and in the aftermath of the Marian persecutions, Jane became viewed as a Protestant martyr for centuries, featuring prominently in the several editions of the Book of Martyrs by John Foxe. The tale of Lady Jane grew to legendary proportions in popular culture, producing a flood of romantic biographies, novels, plays, paintings, and films, one of which was the 1986 production Lady Jane, starring Helena Bonham Carter.

And...I cant leave off this post without mention of Tolken's Black Garbed Horsemen...

Those who used the Nine Rings became mighty in their day, kings, sorcerers, and warriors of old. They obtained glory and great wealth, yet it turned to their undoing. They had, as it seemed, unending life, yet life became unendurable to them. They could walk, if they would, unseen by all eyes in this world beneath the sun, and they could see things in worlds invisible to mortal men; but too often they beheld only the phantoms and delusions of Sauron. And one by one, sooner or later, according to their native strength and to the good or evil of their wills in the beginning, they fell under the thraldom of the ring that they bore and of the domination of the One which was Sauron's. And they became forever invisible save to him that wore the Ruling Ring, and they entered into the realm of shadows. The Nazgûl were they, the Ringwraiths, the Úlairi, the Enemy's most terrible servants; darkness went with them, and they cried with the voices of death. — The Silmarillion, "Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age", 346
