Notes:  back on the 1st, the first day of the challenge, I saw the sun light up the off shore island bluff, and thought, felt, "oh!"...up before dawn to roll out with all the gear...up late getting the umbrella fixed to the plein air easel...looks cool now!...but when I got there, it was windy and cold, and dark...snacked on Jack in the Box #22 and coffee...while waiting, watched the skim boarders prep the lagoon...making for it to flood and make a standing wave as it rushes out the channel they dig...thought to stick around and watch, but it's a world they're in I'm not, and I don't want to intrude...in a couple days, Skid Kids on youtube will likely post clips of todays session...surf and conditions just right!...took awhile, but the sun finally made it up and struck the island bluff, leaving the shore bluff in darkness...and that was it...the "oh"...light and dark...and it was just for that moment I went to Aliso!...knew I would be back from the first day of the stradaeasel contest...

Notes:  game on...on the radio...Angels at Rangers....bottom of second...Angels 2-0...was up late reading about Greek philosophers...apparently, the Socratic Method begins with a definition, which is then taken apart, or some such...not unlike how my post format has taken shape!...actually, I begin now with 'keywords" as google makes a log line with them...a viewer search can see what they are getting into!...often, the pic is in the log line too...the 'taking apart' is the 'notes'...another Socratic idea is the "daemon", one's conscious/conscience, one's "Jiminy Cricket"...stradaeasel's challenge, its daemon,  is to draw/paint from life, once a day for the month of September, later January...'plein air'...ideally, one sets up in a natural setting, with one's easel and paints, and does the painting in one setting...in Yosemite, I saw an artist bring his painting back summer after summer, a plein air effort...so, it can be stretched out, the time taken, or even completed in studio, at home...top of third, Ohtani up, in lead off spot...or, it can just be a pencil or charcoal sketch, to be completed as a painting in studio...the ideal pein air effort is sorta one's daemon's desire...4-3 ground out...every morning I feel the tug to go to the beach, Laguna, set up by waves and bluffs, but, it's too much at moment!...first week and a half I went through three tanks of gas...I've thought to take the buses, but afraid of the contagion...even before, I felt uncomfortable packed into a public bus...so, soh, it's a Socratic turning of a thing: plein air or studio, everyday!...my studio has expanded!...furniture all gone from the living room and kitchen...I can, ala Picasso with his castles, fill them up with my paintings!...as often as I snack at Jack in the Box, here, there-Laguna, it needs to be included!...the two sketches are memory glimpses...sat in Denny's snacking for the big one, at home on the drive, the little one...I could just 'look' at the photo!...but that's way beyond beyond the parameter of the challenge...the memory glimpse is the heart of plein air because of the changing light, if one is including light!...so, I work on that, a lot...all day, day before, day after, I'll wonder about a glimpse...bbk with report...Angels 7-2...and listened to Padres at Dodgers...Dodgers 11-9 in a wild thing...Mookie the Menace Betts homered to begin come back when Padres up 9-5...then, like four more Dodger home runs followed...even Bellinger, the outfielder, hit one, tying it...then Seager drove in two with one...Dodgers two behind Giants...Giants 1, D'Backs 0...Mariners won, still have slim chance...only getting a wild card slot is like just a chance to grab the bat, but it's a chance...of mixed blessings!

Notes:  Rangers 5, Angels 2...Giants winning over the D'Backs...BLT, fries and soda at Angelo's...oh, Giants 6-4 bottom of eighth, their inning...Dodgers 2-1 over Padres, top of ninth, Padres inning...a pause to wait and see!...Dodgers win...Mariners win!...still an outside chance for wild card for Mariners...Yankees 2 up on the Red Sox, Red Sox one up on Blue Jays and Mariners...Angels offense went flat after All Star game, otherwise, they could be in Mariners slot...Giants win...6-4...Dodgers two back with five games to go...

Notes: forgot what date it is, 9/2 on the sketch should be today, 9/27/21...and, and I've often now sketched the Sycamore Tree-a few poems about it too...one can see it is in the middle of things...and, and in the sketch it 'pops'...the ancient vignettes often incorporate the four directions...hard to explain...I dunno...no games of mention today...just one roll out to Jack in the Box, for...drum role...#22: sausage egg breakfast croissant with hash brown patty and large coffee...two ketchups, two sugars, two creamers!...rim shot!...ral!...

Notes: was at the game...Ohtani gave up a homerun to the Mariners in the top of the seventh...that tied it...Angels 1-Mariners 1...and, he was done for the game after seven, over a hundred pitches...much respect from the fans as he left the field...and, and then of course, in the top of the eighth, the relievers gave up four runs...final, Mariners 5-1...when lefty Ohtani comes set, he has both hands with glove right under his chin...when a runner is on, he sets both hands at his belt...

Notes:  game on...on the radio...I was at the game...bought the bargain three dollar above the foul pole seats for tonight, tomorrow night, and Sunday afternoon...left game bottom of fifth...it was tied, but by the time I was at Silver, my Jeep, Angels were behind again...that's how it has gone...Angels keep crawling back...bottom of the eighth...Mariners 6-5...so far, Ohtani has been walked three times...in the last three games, he has been walked ten times!...new battery, new 32gb card (a tiny thing that came with SanDisc SDHC adapter, and works fine), and, my favorite camera up and running...was always free of worry about it in the Valley...it's waterproof, and so dustproof...I used it with the Nikon spotting scope...some of my favorite digipics...retired the card with them...now, if I can just find the D-20!...hmmph...to the bottom of the ninth!...porch pic goes with sketch a few days back...top of order up...Marsh long fly out...Ohtani up...they'll walk him?...2-0...they intentionally walk him!...unbelievable...fans all disappointed, Ohtani fans all over the country!...Gosselin waps a bloop double!...and they intentionally walk Walsh...one out, bases loaded...Mayfield K...two out...Rojas up...0-1...0-2...1-2...ground out....Mariners 6-5...

Notes:  the cactus goes on top of the chair...and, well, not that one...that one is unusual...the top is green, the rest has died and grey...another cactus is on top of the chair..and there are two chairs...and lots of cacti in pots!, on the chairs, around the chairs...on the porch...along with the cats...oh, the chairs are miniature chairs...blue and yellow...most all day the porch front in shade, the old house's south wall in sun...arrow indicates the light...and the pillar post with the mailbox...two parts!...cats often on the porch...where I feed them...oh, game on on the radio...and Angels in the same predicament!...scored on early, they can't catch up!...hmmph...bottom of sixth...Ohtani grounds out...to top of seventh...Astros 3-0...bbk with report...bk...unbelievable!...Angels went ahead, 5-3, but Astros came right back...now it's top of eleven...one out...designated runner to third...intentional walk...runners at corners...the Angels' third base coach dogged it...welp...game isn't over...K...Ohtani tried for home on Fletcher's short fly out to right...shoulda stayed put...ground out, just...to bottom of ninth...Angels 5-5...sac bunt...Regnifo up...Suzuki on third...grounder to first...Wong up...Wong has some ups...1-1...2-1...2-2...ups in the clutch...nope...6-3...to the 12th...earlier, in the 10th, runner held up at third on Mayfield hit, which was deep enough!...hit...runners at corners...hit...Astros 6-5...runners at corners...Altuve up...now the perreneal perch of the boo birds!...another hit...dbl...Astros 8-5...I can't listen-too terrible...bbk with correct spelling of perinaeal!...and report...bk...Astros 9-5...perennial...

Notes:  rolled out to Denny's for mid-afternoon snack...crepe with eggs, sausage, bacon, hashbrowns, coffee...and to sit in an air conditioned environment!...too hot again...simplified the branches of the Sycamore, and finished I thought, but noticed the flag pole through the branches...in my mind's eye the leaves are there!...have a long post on the mind's eye...in the works for months now...for sometime!...naptime nowabout...give the porch fleas and mosquitoes a break!...bk later...bk...Astros 10,Angels 5...and, Ohtani hit number 45!

Notes:  listened to game...A's at Angels...Ohtani pitched thru the top of the eighth...got out of a bases loaded jam...A's ahead since early in the game on two solo homeruns...and, and then, the Angels tied it up in the bottom of the ninth on Rojas' rbi hit...but Mayfield in the top of tenth, dogs the baserunning, on a chopper he gets hung out between second and third...and, Angels lose...A's 3-2...hmmph...another close game...they're good games!...just A's, and the other guys, keep winning!...Rufio the Cat on Silver's, my Jeep's, hood...

Notes: it's like a giant cactus tree, or succulent...12 feet high?...in the neighborhood...and must be over seventy years old....bbk with name...too hot today for anything...did get swap meet canopy parts in Buena Park...canopy for the boat, the boat to be the winter shelter for the cats!...how'd the Ravens do?....brb...ohno!...they lost...Raiders 33-27...sports talk radio will be hell all week....edit: it's an Aloe Tree, I think...there's like three of them, all big...and the leaves, blades? are thinner than the pics of Aloe trees on the web, but I'm pretty sure that's what they are!...the blades in bunches, not one big bunch...

Notes:  At the ground floor is Tacos Cancun...inside a pic of Freda Khalo...enchilada plate a favorite...envisioned it on the roll out...sketch subject for the day...and didn't realize at all the "Palace" it is a part of...very cool architecture!...sat at the Parks cement picnic table, and over my shoulder heard "That's nice!" from a worker...thanks..."You'll have to move soon..."...and I came out of my reverie to take in the noise and commotion of Palm tree trimmers near by...now, this a noteable, as a few days back on a roll back, I saw palm fronds falling way in the distance from a very tall palm, like the one here that has been trimmed...I was in traffic on Harbor...looking closer, I could see the tree trimmer hooked to the tree as they do, breaking loose the fronds he'd cut!...a glimpse filed away, and a thought to work it into this scene!...I deleted out the stop sign, and a bunch...there are two lamp posts...an ongoing motif...one behind the stop sign...another hot day retreat from the ocean...back by 8am...lots of old buildings in Balboa, and always been fond of how Fall light, sunrise, sunset, sets them off-like San Francisco!...game on...Angels at Astros...Ohtani wapped #44 in the first inning...and is on the mound pitching...and Walsh wapped one in the second...these two were a home run duo for awhile, before the all star break...but have been slumping since...Angels 2-0, bottom of second...bbk with report...

Notes:  rolled out before sun up to Balboa...did another sketch of the Boat Tours ticket window...and sketched the Donut Shop...this from the lot, and from Balboa Treat's blue picnic bench...I find I have a fondness for mom and pop businesses for sketches/paintings...ones I frequent...from 6-8am parking is free in the Ferry lot...another warm day, so retreated to home...tried to nap, but pressing chores stressed...rolled out to Goodwill to find out how to donate old stuff...they don't pick up..."maybe Salvation Army?"...almost bought a used washing machine...then tuna sandwich, iced tea, at eatery near home...back at which I browsed for new cameras...rolled out to walmart for what looked like a good sale price on Canon's SX420hs, but something awry, no discount... back at home, fretted over not having a working camera with long lens feature, the DO 70-300/rebel gone, as in stolen; the zoom button on the SX50hs jammed, like super glued!...took the point of a box knife blade and dug out gunk, then took my full sized channel locks, got a grip on the bezel like thingy, twisted, and, and luck!...zoom still clunky, but still works...cloud pic above...ordered new battery with charger...old charger went through the laundry, and now, probably fortunately, lost...I still don't know where my two waterproof point and shoots have gotten to...anyway. seemed to have dodged spending three hundred dollars on a fret...the SX420HS at 250, plus card, is actually a good deal...

Notes:  Rolled out after noon to Huntington Beach...got my State Park Beaches senior pass...continued on to Balboa for a snack...girl was in the Tour Boat place's window/counter...while snacking, hot dog and fries and unsweetened ice tea, kept sneaking peaks to get the text...the charm?...(every scene should have a 'charm')...I was born in 1948!...what can I say?...it's been a four hour cruise!...Padres 8 Angels 5...Cardinals 5 Dodgers 4....and Giants won, late inning come back...Giants 7 Rockies 4....

Notes:  a glimpse sketch...intersection PCH and Newport Blvd...and once I glimpsed it, it pushed aside Aliso...rolled out thataway at sunrise, but diverted...committed the glimpse to memory, and continued to the Balboa Donut Shop...cheese croissant, coffee...thought to go to Crystal Cove for park pass, but the sun rose really fast, and big, and heating up...so U turned and went to Huntington Brookhurst entrance...opens at 9am the office there, and only 7:47 about...back at home, cars parked in front of house gone, so good time to weedwack edge the lawn...and drive...and I was done in by the heat...rested, then thought to roll back to Brookhurst in the White Truck, but hardly out of the neighborhood, the heat poleaxed me...returned, shut everything down, and napped for certain...games are on...Angels at Padres...Dodgers at St. Louis Cardinals...brb...Angels 0-0 thru three innings...Dodgers 7-2...Giants 11- 1 over Rockies in seventh...bbk with report...Angels won!..Angels 4-0...put a halo over this one!

Notes:  it's like 7:47am...been out and back to Balboa...sausage egg croissant, coffee, at the self same donut shop of yesterday...thought to go to Redondo...for another time...then thought Newport Pier...things a bit weird there...parking lot by the Pier more than half full before 6am...vagabond campers?...I dunno...even Balboa Pier parking has campers...like one fourth of the slots...again I parked at the Ferry lot, and sketched the Bathroom House...it is really charming architecturally...if I could, I'd put that design on the side of the old GG House-do something with the blank sunny side, or even build a house like it!...make a fountain, pool...the design has a Spanish look, and tiles highlighting...in fact, it is the underworld motif!..two dragon pillars with a cave...I dunno...I've wanted nothing to do with the holiday Labor Day crowds...tomorrow I can get my senior pass to the State beaches, and feel more settled about where to go on the roll outs...I used a fine line sharpie pen to indicate the tiles...mixed media I hadn't thought of-charcoal and black pen and ink...with the pen I  can do detail I can't with the charcoal sticks and even the charcoal pencil...an avenue to explore...brb...lots of tutorials...https://painting.tube/figure-drawing-in-ink-and-charcoal/ ...like to find some Old Masters' examples...time for my all day beat the heat nap...

Notes: rolled out before dawn to Balboa...parked at the Ferry lot, favored now than over by the Pier...too many rascals by the Pier...anyway, had a clear view of the corner souvenir shop that I often pass by on walks here...hadn't noticed it specialized in toe rings...the usual display is seashells and such...and I didn't notice the feet until I nearly finished the pen ink sketch!...left window has a Dream Catcher...got out and walked over to the donut place...croissant and coffee, snacked on the rollabout back...back by nine...before the heat...Angels lost...Rangers 7-3...Odell with the two home runs...Dodgers won yesterday, and lost today to the Giants...a seesaw battle for first place!...there's another T's in Redondo Beach...that's a straight shot on the 405, but not for Silver, my Jeep, as because of the death wobble...so, soh, thought is to use the White Truck tomorrowmorrow...it's been sitting, and needs a rollabout to charge the battery, lubricate things...my Pier Collection stopped at Cabrillo...try to add the LA northern ones...

Notes:   game on...Rangers at Angels...bottom of eighth...Ohtani got them here through seven, Angels 3-2...relief almost blew it...top of ninth...Rangers having a sad season...Iglasias to pitch the ninth...rolled out before dawn...destination that Back Bay View Park on Jamboree...and, and thereabout no parking nearabout...tried to go down to the Dunes, but gated and confusing...this whole section along Hwy One is like walled and gated...did park at Ruby's lot...a long long walk back from there...and thought to get breakfast, Ruby's ablaze with lights on, but no one about-before 7am...I dunno...I just left off...noting the Park's sign on way back...and did a glimpse sketch of Duffy's Electric Boat lot on the Bay side of One...I see these style boats all the time puttering about...Monet would love to have one...me too, and, in fact, I have one...my 16 ft Boston Whaler could be given a canopy and become a reasonable facsimile...if I can ever get around to fixing it up...then, then I could putter about the Bay, even near shore on the Ocean, and do plein airs in peace and quiet!...for sometime!...Angels 3-2...Ohtani with a win...put a halo over this one...what's up with Dodgers at Giants?...brb...oh!....game tied bottom of ninth!...Giants up...Posey up...my hero!...rooted for the Giants in my time in the Valley-their championship years...don't know who to root for now between Dodgers, Giants, Padres..."home' teams all when I lived near them...Oakland too...and all played in World Series thenabouts...was in Rainbow when Angels won...Padres lost to the Yankees...Reggie Jackson was with Oakland...ground out...top of tenth with Pujols on second...eek!...Pujols can't run...what?...Pujols tags up and makes it to third!...Pujols baseball smart...lol...and now they put pinch runner in for Pujols-Bueller...Bueller will find a way to dog it...oh, he does make it home on Turner's sac fly to center...bbk with report...bk...so, Posey, like Pujols, slow, and he made the last out in ninth, soo, he's on second to begin bottom of tenth...and comes across home on a sac fly-throw in was off...tie game...then, then Posey comes up in bottom of eleventh, and waps a grounder that's bobbled, a walk off run scored on an error...Giants 3-2...hmmph!

Battleship Iowa Next Right

Notes: took the Akaso camera with...took a pic...and, and don't know how to download it...a study...rolled out before sunup...took Westminster to 2, which is a straight shot through Long Beach to the Terminal Island Bridges, and there a right at the USS Iowa exit...like  a half hour drive, and an extraordinary change in scenery...lots to see...too much!...not just container ships parked, but containers stacked everywhere!...and seems a proliferation of  the container cranes since last I went this way...that on the bus when I was doing the fishing pier challenge, my own made up thing...then, I walked from the battleship all the way to Cabrillo Beach, a long walk!...a new bridge is up...just two tall pillars with support cables...opened last year, I gather...from the vantage of the parking lot, I couldn't see the container ships...didn't think to ride up top the bluff thereabout above the aquarium...there's one ship in the sketch!...

Day 1 #stradaseasel

Notes: rolled out before sunup, without much sleep...reached Aliso at 6am...overcast cloudy...and, and the anticipated place to be begin the plein aire effort, the "spot", the parking spot nearest the Palace/Bluff, the Palm Island, was, I dunno, under construction...four parking spots to the right converted to handicap...dont know but the spot will be too...snacked on Jack in the Box #22/large coffee...in the dark, threw all the oil painting gear, the plein air easel, in Silver, my Jeep...and between lack of sleep, and upset tummy, couldn't muster to set up on the Spot, which I could still do...just having to park behind it...thought long...did the sketch when it occurred to take note of what was right in front of me...the little barrier is bright bright orange...out on the ocean is a lobster trap float-too, bright orange...and in the sky, a touch of pink/orange from the sun rise...otherwise, everything was greens and greys...a reflective puddle-high tide had washed sand all over the lot...the seagull on the lamp post an Aliso icon!...no skid kids this early, but over the weekend there was a contest...see Skid Kids on youtube...the beach is torn up from high surf in August...missing sand...giant pick up truck rolled up playing loud music...parked, and still played loud music...and, I left off...thought is to go to Long Beach tomorrow, and see the parked container ships...there, or a little view park at Jamboree and Hwy 1 that overlooks the Back Bay...one camera swiped, another damaged, others somewhere...I have this itch to buy a new small point and shoot...just for the out and abouts...
