Benitoite is the primary mineral of interest from this deposit. It is a ring silicate and crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system. Early in the theoretical development of crystallography it was hypothesized that there was a classof the hexagonal system that would produce trigonally shaped crystals. The discovery of benitoite provided the mineral world with the first species known to crystallize in the ditrigonal-dipyramidal class of the hexagonal crystal system. This class is referred to as the “Benitoite Type” in Dana. Twinning of benitoite occurs as 180 degree rotation about the c-axis (0001). An equidimensional twinned crystal is referd to as a "Star of David" owing to its perfect six sided star. Twinning has only been found in benitoite crystals included with crossite. Complete crystals of this form are very rare.

The Krell were originally frog-like in nature with two long legs and a big tail. They were never shown, but it was indicated in the original screenplay that the ramps between the steps were designed to accommodate their dragging tail.
