The so-called Assyrian sacred tree is the most discussed motif in the historiography of Assyrian
art.
... ... ...
To date, no contemporary text has been found
that mentions this ‘tree,’ and, as a result, scholars have not yet arrived at a consensus on its iconography.
... ... ...
Scholars have tended towards three principal interpretations
of the sacred tree: that it represents the ‘tree of life’ known from Genesis, or a stylized date palm, or
a constructed cult object.
... ... ...
This
book, then, is a critical historiography, which both surveys the vast literature on this topic and intervenes
in the debate. It will be found invaluable by anyone who wishes to study this enigmatic motif, and it
will also be of interest to historians of Assyrian art and religious cult. And as an analysis of the ways in
which a scholarly debate can fall victim to an implausible consensus, it will provide a useful test case for
students in the growing field of historiography.

I happened on that thinking maybe the Sumerian Tree is a stylized river delta, showing the canals for irrigation.

And I happened on that thought reading, that the famous Sumerian bucket, or bag, is a water bucket, and the famous pine cone, used to dip into the bucket, was used to sprinkle water...reading about the Sumerian god Enki made an impression how important water, underground water, irrigation, was to the ancient Sumerians...currently, Iraq's waterways are in great peril...the conflicts have left the irrigation systems a shambles...just getting drinking water is becoming problematic...the countries around Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Iran, are building dam after dam, and cutting off the flow of water to the Tigris and Euphrates...the delta reeds, the Marsh Arabs, are losing their habitat...a thought of the scholars is the Tree could be the a stylized representation of these rivers' delta at the Persian Gulf...the Garden of Eden is thought to be where the Delta is...for sometime, the Tree and the Garden...oh...already the bottom of the ninth!...one out to go...continue this tomorromorrow...fly out...and that is how the ball game ends...Angels 9-4...you can put a halo over this one!
