Hwy 20 Hawk

After Breakfast, cornflakes, milk, yogurt, toast, orange juice, rolled off with the windshield wipers wiping--Rain again...small Hawk flew over the Motel's Roof...thought to stop again at Arcata Marsh, but too rainy....reached Humboldt Redwoods, and saw sign for Avenue Of The Giants, but stayed on 101...saw several more Signs saying same, and finally took one...was anxious to get to the Coast, but hopped out and walked about at the Founders Grove...memories of vacations when I was a kid....Redwoods are like Snow....all Summer one can't picture, or imagine, Snow...then in Fall or Winter, Snow falls, and Snow is like there....Redwoods are unimaginable, unrememberable, until one is there, amongst Redwoods...I worked and lived a few months in Giant Forest, Sequoia...oh...a visit for sometime....finances are too depleted!....will have to stay hereabout for the remainder of vacation days, hereabout is back in the Valley...but back to where I was...finished the short walk, and rolling beneath the Redwoods, and Pines with upsweeping Branches, I sighted Redtail right over the Road, nestled in the greengreen Branches....couldn't stop, couldn't get pic...but the glimpse was knockdown!....back on 101, I came to the Road to Ft. Bragg, and Hwy 1...it may have been 1...dont know if it is me, or the Road Signs in Northern California...but the Signs are all a little off...even one of my Roadmaps doesn't have Eureka on it...and just the tangle of Roads in places is confusing...anyway....1 to the Coast was twistytwiny, scenic, rainy, and Critter quiet...and when I reached the Coast--Fog....hmmph...it was foggy all the way to Ft. Bragg, and likely beyond, but at Bragg, I diverted inland on 20...,made one stop before Bragg when I saw Small Hawk on Yellow Triangle Road Sign...found a pull out, and walked back to looksee, but oncoming car startled Hawk....Hwy 20 is a terrific Road....when I got to Clear Lake, I saw I didn't know what...a Big Wing of some sort perched on a Dock...found a pullout and walked back...and at the Dock, sighted Owl...wait,...two, three Owls...oh....Owl Scarecrows!!...pic....hmmph...a bit further along, sighted Woopecker's Birdhouses and Bat Houses Store...pic....Clear Lake is huge, and has a thriving community along its Shore....there's a transition zone hereabout in N. Cal. where the Pine Forests meet Oak Woodlands over Rolling Hills which I reallyreally like....and Hwy 20 has some of the best of these scenics.....sighted Hawk, Redshoulder on Barbed Wire Fence, in the fading Light, almost Sunset, downhill from Lake, and pulled over and walked back...but Hawk flew past on the far side of the Road, and over a Knoll...rolling along the pullout to get back onto the Road took me past the Knoll, and I went slow, expectant, and Hawk was there, perched again...pic through the Window...Redshoulders fly a bit, then perch, then fly a bit, and perch again....Hawk last pic of the very few for the day..and last pic of the trip....sighted Redtail Hawk flying across Road at very last light....heard a jillion Frogs at a fuel stop just south of Sacramento.....and at the beginning of Briceberg Grade, this just past Mariposa, sighted Raccoon on opposite Road side...made a U Turn to shine Headlights...thought Raccoon maybe hurt, but Raccoon scurried off into the Brush...and sighted Antlered Buck in the Valley, in the Headlights, by Sentinel Camp Ground....no new Snow in the Valley...Road near Sentinel Bridge may have been icy...wheel traction didn't feel right...I go slow...and got back around eleven, left Arcata at around nine...a long day's ride!!

Such a lovely group of pictures...it really makes me feel your trip. The bird houses are so northern California it makes me homesick! The pic of silver is fantastic too...deep in the woods, awaiting the word to travel on down the road.
