OTI:notes:6/618

Open To Interpretation

Notes: game on...on the radio...Dodgers at Pirates...Kemp up...two out bottom of 1st...ground rule double...Kemp is leading the NL in hitting...the second site I found about Robert Godon Wasson, Robert Graves, magic mushrooms, centered on the 1957 Life magazine story...much is thought about when the, what can I call it, oh, the flower children began...some date the event to poet Ginsberg reading his poem Howl, and the term 'hippie' to Jack Kerouac...many you tubes going on about this...sometime historical events are so changing, that the calendars note it...historians once dated things as BC, before Christ, and AD, anno domino, after Christ...that has been adjusted for, I guess, political correctness...Dodgers made out...to top of 2nd...

quote

BCE (Before Common Era) and BC (Before Christ) mean the same thing- previous to year 1 CE (Common Era). This is the same as the year AD 1 (Anno Domini); the latter means “in the year of the lord,” often translated as “in the year of our lord.”

Harrison thrown out going to third...in my searches, I've been using "pre-Columbian", or "pre-history" to narrow my searches...in 1957 Sputnik was launched, and now there is a sense of pre-sputnik and after-sputnik...each technological advance is an advent, and a forever before and after...before and after Tesla threw the switch at Niagara Falls is one of my favorites...anyway, when Graves took magic mushrooms with Wasson in the fifties, it was a personal before and after for him...and he kind of went off, thinking it should be a kind of new learning 'technology' to be introduced...he wasn't alone in that, there were like millions...and the beginning of the flower children maybe be more properly dated to Life's article in 1957...a flood of the curious went to Mexico to find Wasson's Mexican Indians who introduced him to mushrooms, and made a mess...which continues!...Graves backed away, following he had a 'bad trip' a second time, and came to regard hippies with amusement, but not so much their mind altering inebriations...that plot of  the old movieCalTike, where archaeologist disturb an ancient Mayan monster...brb...

from wiki

The film's storyline concerns a team of archaeologists investigating Mayan ruins who come across a creature that is a shapeless, amorphous blob.

movie came out in 1959...in 1957 I was...9!...but we subscribed to Life and Saturday Evening Post, the daily newspaper, National Geographic, TV Guide, Readers Digest...and I read all of them...mostly always on the lookout for dinosaur stories...and there were comic books, and television, and Disneyland newly opened down the street...the Dodgers too had arrived in Los Angeles...and I went to church every Sunday...and school during the week...it was all a bit much....and continued to get more and more a bit much!...events, with before and after, import, followed one after another, and still do...anyway, that '57 article likely I thought little of, if I saw it at all, but it was a before and after event...Life magazine was itself a kind of before and after when it was first published...1937...the second or so issue, forget if it is the Koala one, or the dam one, these on the covers, that had the story of the sinking of the USS Panay...it was the beginning of America's being 'on guard'...and it's thought we weren't 'on guard' enough, and Pearl Harbor happened, so we went 'on guard' more...then there was Sputnik, and then there was 911, and today in the news is the new Chinese fighter plane...a hit batter and two walks...Pirates have something going...called Dark Tower...it's a drone...pilotless fighter planes have been a thought for awhile, and pilots are reluctant to give up their 'top gun' roles...but this plane may be a 'before and after'...before robot fighter planes, after robot fighter planes....strike three...second out of the second...I think its the Pirates...I don't know all the Dodgers names!...Ferguson pitching...oh oh...hit the line, chalk flew up...a three run double...Pirates 3-0...anyway, the Caltiki blob was a kind of Hollywood analog to Wasson/Graves magic mushroom promotion...at least in the eyes of those seeing flower children as a threat...a threat to be 'on guard' about...hmmph...

quote

On the night of June 29-30, 1955, in a Mexican Indian village so remote from the world that most of the people still speak no Spanish, my friend Allan Richardson and I shared with a family of Indian friends a celebration of "holy communion" where "divine" mushrooms where first adored and then consumed. The Indians mingled Christian and pre-Christian elements in their religious practices in a way disconcerting for Christians but natural for them. The rite was led by two women, mother and daughter, both of them curanderas, or shamans.

hmmph...a curio!

quote
from same

For two strange timeless nights in almost complete darkness, Wasson and Richardson sat in an underground room with the curandera, Eva Mendez.

but I'm getting ahead of myself...need to note that second site...if I can find it again!...Pirates made out...in a bit I'm off to see the Angels/Royals...went to last nights game...a marvel!!!...Heaney pitched a one hitter....Angels 1-0...there was play in the fifth inning...Angel runners on first and third...Marte and Young...Scocia had Young take off for home, and Marte for second...a suicide double steal!...and the Royals catcher bit, threw to second...Marte made no effort to continue between first and second, and the Royals had to run him down...meanwhile Young scored!...the Angels one run...I was keeping score, and it was so sneaky, I didn't note it...thinking the score tied 0-0 all the way  to the eighth inning, when the big board noted the play of the game...Young scoring...'we scored'? my thought...studied my scorebook, and recalled the odd cheering in the fifth, and realized what I missed!...Scocia is a fox!...found the article, title alone tells it's hair curling contents...
